A true accolade for Hans-Martin Buff at the 67th Grammy Awards last Sunday in Los Angeles: Our alumnus has wonthe highest international honor in the music industry in the category "Best Immersive Audio Album", which he produced as a recording engineer for Peter Gabriel.
The 55-year-old music producer has had an impressive career: Back in the 1990s, he moved to the USA, where he joined Prince’s legendary Paisley Park Studios. As his personal recording engineer, he was responsible not only for recording "His Purple Majesty" but also for Prince’s collaborations with artists such as No Doubt, Chaka Khan, and Larry Graham. In 2001, he returned to Europe, where he has since worked with numerous national and international artists, including Mousse T., Zucchero, Eric Burdon, and the Scorpions.
From 2018 to 2020, he studied at our Cologne campus, earning his Master of Arts in cooperation with Middlesex University. During his studies, he laid the foundation for his next major career focus: the production of three-dimensional music. Today, his expertise in immersive sound is in high demand from artists worldwide.
Hans-Martin currently works as a freelance recording engineer and music producer in Bavaria. He collaborates closely with msm-studios GmbH & Co. KG in Munich and Berlin, as well as with Real World Studios in England, where he created the Dolby Atmos "In-Side" mixes for Peter Gabriel’s 2023 album i/o. This work has now been recognized with a Grammy Award by The Recording Academy.
